Emma McCloud was born in 1978 in Uro City's Ondari district. Her mother, Marion Louis-McCloud, and her father, Brian James McCloud, divorced when she was only 3 years old, so Emma has no memories of a unified family. She was was initially raised under the care of her mother, an accountant in Ondari district. During her early teenage years, she showed a remarkable ability to systematically dissect complex electronics and and navigate electronic systems. Her mischievous habit of reprogramming her mother's calculators was only a hint of things to come. In the early 1990's she was exposed to the world of computer hacking, and quickly embraced and applied the various techniques she encountered along the way. Her exposure to this culture spurned her talent for trouble, and often found her at the helm of illegal activities. In 1993 she gained access to an EasternRail railroad system database and shut down all trains scheduled to leave Uro City. She was arrested and later released to the custody of her father, who was then District Attorney, due to the fact that she was a minor. From that day forward she was raised in Uro's Blue Ardical district. It was later learned that the reason her EasternRail shutdown was to stop her older boyfriend from leaving the city to see a second girlfriend, whom Emma was well aware of.

By 1996, only 17 years old she was considered an elite hacker among her peers, a reputation that was solidified on her 18th birthday. In late 1996, Emma attempted to hack into the shareholding systems of three major rare stone & jewel companies on the east coast, which she did successfully. Within one night, she managed to reroute the holdings of over 7,000 investors from all over the globe into ten ghost accounts which she single-handedly set up and illegally authorized at different banks. She then initiated a custom-made program code that randomly circulated and tracked small amounts of the funds between her ghost accounts and bank accounts accross the United States. Emma's exceptional cyber heist cost the rare gems market an estimated 75 million dollars. Unfortunately she was soon thereafter caught and arrested, and went down in history as both the youngest cyber-criminal to successfully complete a large-scale financial offense and as the perpetrator of the most costly cyber-crime of the 20th century. This legendary feat earned her the nickname "The Queen of Diamonds" and also earned her the respect of hackers and techies and rebels around the world, with many fans turning up to her subsequent trial clad in t-shirts with images of the classic playing card with a slogan reading "Free the Queen."

Due solely to her father's compliance and influence with local courts, Emma was given a sentence of only 5 years, lowered from 15. Her father worked with state officials to ensure that the stolen funds were returned to the three companies from which they were stolen, however due to Emma's expert programming, the state was only able to recover 64 million dollars. Currently there is still an 11 million dollar sum that is unnaccounted for and because of Emma's programming and her vow of silence on the matter, is untraceable and has been officially considered "lost funds." In 2000, she was given an early release after being contacted by the newly formed Janus Society. Marshall King, recognizing her near-unlimited potential and indispensable expertise, decided that Emma would be the rock upon which he would build his elite Blackwater Project.

A master software designer and programmer, Emma is the official software systems analyst and supervisor for the Blackwater Project, as well as its first official member. She is also responsible for the organization and maintenance of all Blackwater data and Janus Society data, including intelligence, surveillance records, public data, personnel data, financial transactions, and mission reports. She is known to be a caring and compassionate young lady among the Blackwater team, and has taken a particular liking to Kai Harunara, whom she often jokingly calls "Red" due to his red hair, and often relates to as a younger brother.
